With the bringing together of the many parts of my Miss America body of work – the paintings, videos and photographs, all of which had only been shown separately prior to this show – I was able to explore more fully the voyeuristic nature of these pageants. The intention was an examination of how through it’s spectacle with it’s inherent voyeurism the pageant perpetuates and solidifies gender norms using a circuit of relational dynamics between the judges, contestants, former contestants, pageant hosts, television cameras and the audience. With our installation of the show the curator (the artist Leigh LeDare) and I sought to bring the art viewing audience into this circular dynamic and create a sense of unease and discomfort in the viewer – that feeling one can sometimes have when one finds themselves confronted by their own complacency with the often repressive rules of a social hierarchy.
